@MaliyahMadeThis was a digital art project I launched on Instagram during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic. At a time when many were experimenting with illustration, I noticed something missing: diverse skin tones, hair textures, body shapes, and gender expressions. My goal was to bring those identities forward—visibly and intentionally.
Using my iPad, Apple Pencil, and Procreate, I created illustrations rooted in a cohesive color story and a commitment to real-world representation. Every piece was inspired by a photo, a model, or an artist—always credited—which often led to unexpected connections. Some of the subjects noticed, reached out, and commissioned custom work. Through the account, I connected with local institutions like the Waterloo Region District School Board, and global figures like influencer Matilda Djerf and New York Times bestselling author Rupi Kaur.
Though @MaliyahMadeThis is now archived, it was featured in The Community Edition and the University of Waterloo’s Imprint, and remains a meaningful part of my creative journey.
A reminder to stay creative, even in the quiet. This project helped me carve out space for passion, purpose, and joy—when I needed it most.
